GEM map: 35,089 project phases, including 19,403 operating. Points are not individual turbines; the main threshold is 10 MW, with approximate coordinates included. Global wind: NOAA PSL / NCEP–NCAR Reanalysis 1, 10 m, 1991–2020. Monthly climatologies are weighted by month length for an annual mean. Native grid: 192 × 94, 1.875° longitude and Gaussian latitudes, including open oceans; polar caps beyond ±88.542° remain uncoloured. Colours encode climatological daily-vector wind speed; short lines follow annual mean u/v, not observed parcel trajectories, gusts or electricity output. Display interpolation adds no observational detail. Japan uses GWA 4.0, 2008–2017, 100 m, approximately 250 m. Different heights, periods and resolutions preclude direct comparison and project-specific siting conclusions.
