Data, sources and interpretation
Lithium and cobalt are individual elements; rare earths are an element group. Their records share a map as resources for batteries and motors. Silver, blue and gold identify resource categories; opacity shows recorded development stage.
3,305 commodity records from the 2016 export; systematic updates ceased in 2011. Recorded status is not a current verification. Sites may appear under multiple commodities. Counts are not unique mines, reserves or production. Plants and unknown status are omitted.
Rare earths comprise 17 elements: 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. Lithium and cobalt are not rare earths. Gold points follow the grouped MRDS REE category, not separate records for every element; they do not mean all 17 occur at each site. USGS · Rare-earth elements
Producer 100% / Past producer 65% / Prospect 38% / Occurrence 18% maximum opacity. Producer marks have twice the diameter of other stages; size does not encode output. Pulsing marks records classified as Producer at the time of entry; it does not indicate current production.
