Relief shading is derived from elevation and water depth. More detail loads as you zoom in. State borders and city names appear at readable scales.

NOAA ETOPO 2022 ↗: Elevation and depth at 60 arc-seconds. Contour intervals change with zoom: 2,000 / 1,000 / 500 / 200 m. Seafloor relief includes depth contours. Terrain shading is enhanced while data shading stays subtle. Elevations are not extruded in 3D.

Natural Earth 1:10m ↗: Coastlines, administrative boundaries and place names. Borders follow the source's de facto representation; disputed or undetermined boundaries are dashed. Place names follow the selected language where available.

FIRE / Daily detections

Follow Earth's activity through points of heat.

Daily thermal detections around the world. Color shows fire radiative power, revealing concentrations of stronger heat.

What this visualization shows

Points are not fire counts or burned area. No detection does not mean no fire.

How to read this map

Points are global thermal anomaly detections, including non-wildfire heat sources and repeated detections of the same fire. Not fire counts or burned area.

Only nominal and high confidence. Incomplete first and last UTC days are excluded.

Linear color scale: 0–20 MW. Higher values use the maximum color while readouts preserve original FRP. Markers have fixed screen size, not fire area.

A fixed-period near-real-time product. Clouds and satellite overpass timing may cause missed detections. Areas without detections may still have fires.

Point positions are not interpolated across days.
